Forbes Living Uncovers Tanning Salon Health Claims

Tanning salons are big business in the United States as many adults and teens hope to obtain that sunny, bronze look. But there are health risks in the ultra violet rays which provide that tanned look, as Forbes Living reviews.

The use of ultra violet devices can increase exposure to cancer-causing radiation. The World Health Organization reported in 2009 that tanning beds are noted in the highest cancer risk category. Last year, the U.S. Surgeon General asked for a reduction in UV tanning as the cases of skin cancer are rising.  Young adults are most at risk for skin cancer caused by the use of tanning beds. In their effort to look healthful and sun-kissed for the major events in their lives, tanning beds can be dangerous and potentially cause adverse effects. In fact, some U.S. states ban the use of tanning salons for children under age 17 and require parental consent.

The Forbes Living talk show encourages parents and other adults to thoroughly research the tanning salon before using one.  Question any marketing attempt which claims the UV rays boost Vitamin D and provide health benefits.  Limit time in a tanning bed to the minimum. Head outdoors instead after slathering the body with sunscreen. Natural sunlight is much healthier than fake one.

Forbes Living Asks If Readers Discipline Another Parent’s Kids

There are times when a child is acting so badly that something has to be done or someone has to step up. Even if the child is not yours and even when the child’s parent is standing right there. Forbes Living wants to know if readers have ever disciplined another parent’s kid.

Parents of the Baby Boomer generation had no trouble spanking a misbehaving child or sticking a bar of soap in the child’s mouth if he or she said a bad word. They had no second thoughts about spanking another child either. Or smacking the hands of a kid who grabbed something that wasn’t theirs to take. Many Boomer adults can attest to the horror of having to lie across a lap and be spanked. Worse than that were the school principals who kept paddles in clear sight and used them. The fear of the sting was sometimes enough to keep kids from going off the handle.

But what happens when a child is visiting and misbehaves to the point of causing others harm? What happens when the parent or parents are not there? And what happens when they are and don’t do anything?  Is it okay to spank or scold someone else’s child?  Every parent has their own form of disciplining their children. Forbes Living TV asks readers: is okay to discipline someone else’s child? Have you ever scolded or spanked another child?

Got kids? It is more than likely that there are quite a few Internet acronyms that you may have seen but have no idea what they mean. Forbes Living shares them with you and offers some other sources for learning more.

Today’s teens are constantly connected to digital devices and are more susceptible to a friend or stranger’s request for something the parent would object to. Acronyms such as LOL and OMG are pretty common and almost everyone knows them. But do you know what ISWN or GNOC means? Neither did we. When we found out we were shocked. Below are some of the terms very parent needs to know:

UWSN – I Want Sex Now
GNOC – Get Naked on Camera
NIFOC - Naked in front of computer
PIR - Parent in room
1174' - Party meeting place
CID - Acid (the drug)
Broken - Hungover from alcohol
420 – Marijuana
(L)MIRL - Let's meet in real life
WTTP - Want to trade pictures?

When we were teens it was not uncommon for a parent to walk into a bedroom to see what the kids were doing. The only place for a private phone call was in the bathroom. Today, kids have their own smart phones and many more ways to reach out and touch each other.  Forbes Living TV suggests learning more about the acronyms kids use when communicating. Click here.

Forbes Living TV on Beverage Alternatives to Diet Soda

Make your own flavored sparkling water drink

It is a common misconception that diet sodas will help people lose weight. While the drinks may not contain sugar, the sugar substitute is not much better. In fact, it can lead some to think that they might not be contributing to obesity by drinking a diet soda. Forbes Living TV offers some beverage alternatives which are better for us.

Drink water. It is a natural hydrator. It is usually free or sold in bottles at a very low price. It is portable, can be recapped to prevent spilling when moving and can be flavored.

Sugar-free juices are another good alternative. Some contain extra vitamins and minerals to improve overall health. And most do not cost too much. They are usually sold in boxes or small cartons.

Green tea comes in a several forms and different taste varieties to please most taste buds. Drink it cold from a can or bottle, or make it hot and add honey to naturally sweeten it up.

Sparkling flavored water will give carbonated beverage lovers the bubbly they desire with no added artificial ingredients. Tonic water flavored with strawberry slices and lemon or lime adds flavor and zip to the drink.

As the weather becomes cooler and heaters come on, Forbes Living TV recommends readers stay hydrated all year long.  Kick the diet soda addiction out in the cold with the above ideas or tell us yours.

Forbes Living Shares the Qualities of Mindful Woman

Women come in all shapes and sizes. There are those who tackle life’s obstacles with brash loudness, emotional tantrums and angry rants. And then there are those who manage to stay calm, display reason and are not egotistical in nature. These are some of the qualities of the mindful woman Forbes Living shares.

Mindful women think of themselves in the way they wish to be perceived. Quiet confidence is a sign of grace and a trait some ladies do not possess. A mindful woman is well aware that being in control in all situations is vital to being perceived as strong and confident. They feel no need to be manipulative or use emotional tricks. People view this calm, rational person as smart, and smart is sexy.

Sexy is not when one dresses in a provocative manner, but when one dresses in a way which shows some constraint while evoking professionalism. Women can be classically sexy and inventive by using their charm, intelligence and beauty in a way which makes others try to draw more of that out of them. Forbes Living TV suggests being clear when it comes to your standards and not yielding to others gracefully. Demanding women are annoying to be around and no one really wants to spend time with them. Always put yourself first. Once you are taken care of, it’s easier to be mindful of the others. Look in the mirror often. What kind of woman do you see? Do what you can to make her a more mindful person. Maybe others will follow.
