Forbes Living Looks at Wage Equality in the United States

It is a well-known fact that women in the United States get paid 78 cents when men get paid a dollar. This cause was brought to the world’s attention during the recent Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 22, by Oscar winner Patricia Arquette. Forbes Living weighs in.

Over the years, actors who win an Oscar for excellence in their craft, have taken a stand for a cause important to them. This year, actor Patricia Arquette accepted her award and reminded the world that women have fought for everyone else’s cause, supported everyone else, and that the time is now to implement equal pay for women.

Fifty-two years ago, President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act. And 52 years later, women are still fighting to be paid equally in America. Women hold nearly half of today’s jobs, and their earnings account for a significant portion of household income. But the pay gap is still prevalent and run even wider for African-Americans and Latinas.

Female full-time workers earn 18% less per week than men. Female CEOs make 20% less. The gap opens to 43% in the legal field. Four out of ten family breadwinners are women.

Forbes Living TV believes that all women deserve to be paid equally. But this will not happen unless it is made a Federal law and applies at the state level. If you believe women should be paid fairly and equally, now is the time to speak up. #demandwageequality #womenworkharder #equaljobequalpay

Forbes Living TV on Why Weekly Weigh-Ins Help People Reach Weight Goals

Many weight loss programs stress the importance of self weekly weigh-ins or joining a group that meets once a week for information, sharing and getting weighed. Meeting weekly weight goals is one way to stay on track when it seems like reaching the end is far off. Forbes Living TV explains why.

It may seem contradictory, but even a small weight gain one week, helps someone trying to lose weight and regain good health. It reminds the person that bodies are made of water and other matter, that a cheeseburger on Friday and can effect weight on Saturday and that it’s okay to have a small ice cream one every once in a while.

There are some doctors that do not believe weighing in weekly is helpful. The highly respected medical journal PLOS ONE found that people who did a regular self weigh-in weekly ere more likely to reach a weight goal than those who stepped on the scale less often. Forbes Living TV also relays that when people are self-monitoring their weight, they are more aware of what they eat and tend to take it easy was during festive times like the holidays. After all, one does not eat a plate full of holidays sweets and step on the scale the next day hoping the number goes down. Take it easy over the next two weeks and step on a the nearest scale before Sunday morning, when weight tends to be higher.

Forbes Living TV Shares Information on Nutritional Supplements

There are hundreds of bottles of nutritional supplements on store shelves these days. But how do you know if they are good or not. Forbes Living TV shares information on some of the nutritional supplements sold today.

Most of the supplements sold in stores and drug stores claim to prevent illness, boost metabolism, improve energy and even make skin look better. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, (JAMA), found that some supplements have been recalled by the FDA for containing banned substances such as steroids or strong medications such as Prozac. More than half of the recalled products were back on store shelves within six months because there is very little regulation by the FDA for nutritional supplements.

By year end, Americans could spend $32 billion on vitamins and dietary supplements. Forbes Living TV shares information to make choosing them easier and safer:

Do not buy any supplements for weight loss, exercise or sexual enhancement. These are most likely to contain banned ingredients.

Shop at name brand stores, drugs stores and vitamin stores because they are quicker to act on recalled items and they offer the safest brands.

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap herbal supplement, you will probably not get its full benefits. Better quality is found in established products.

Look for the USP label on the bottle as this means that the pill has been verified to have the ingredients in it and in the correct amount.

Do your homework on reputable websites for more information.

Forbes Living TV Explores the Benefits of Community College Degrees

Westmoreland County Community College, PA

It wasn’t that long ago when high school guidance counselors discouraged students from attending a community college. But things are different today. The benefits of going to a local school can be good, as Forbes Living TV learns.

A study conducted by the journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis found that earning a degree or getting a certificate from a community college can increase a worker’s salary in the long run. Employees who attended a one year program also noted job advancement in their chosen careers. Those who took shorter programs did not seem the same results.  Community college graduates or certificate holders used to not get the respect they deserved from prospective hiring managers. But that’s changed today as more students are choosing community college over a four year college.

Community colleges usually offer their programs at a much lesser cost than the traditional four year degree programs. Schools are closer to home and are offering science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses which are highly sought in today’s work force. Forbes Living TV also learns that students who earn an associate’s degree or a long-term certificate have a better chance of getting a job and earning more over the long run. It might just pay to explore the programs offered at a community college near you.

Forbes Living Shares the Qualities of Mindful Woman

Women come in all shapes and sizes. There are those who tackle life’s obstacles with brash loudness, emotional tantrums and angry rants. And then there are those who manage to stay calm, display reason and are not egotistical in nature. These are some of the qualities of the mindful woman Forbes Living shares.

Mindful women think of themselves in the way they wish to be perceived. Quiet confidence is a sign of grace and a trait some ladies do not possess. A mindful woman is well aware that being in control in all situations is vital to being perceived as strong and confident. They feel no need to be manipulative or use emotional tricks. People view this calm, rational person as smart, and smart is sexy.

Sexy is not when one dresses in a provocative manner, but when one dresses in a way which shows some constraint while evoking professionalism. Women can be classically sexy and inventive by using their charm, intelligence and beauty in a way which makes others try to draw more of that out of them. Forbes Living TV suggests being clear when it comes to your standards and not yielding to others gracefully. Demanding women are annoying to be around and no one really wants to spend time with them. Always put yourself first. Once you are taken care of, it’s easier to be mindful of the others. Look in the mirror often. What kind of woman do you see? Do what you can to make her a more mindful person. Maybe others will follow.
