Forbes Living TV Savors Alone Time

Forbes Living TV savors alone time. Even though we are busy at work, busy as home and wanting to always connect with friends and family on social networking sites, sometimes, being alone can be great.

More than 50 percent of American adults are single. That’s a lot of people who might spend a lot of time by themselves. Some people might not consider themselves alone if they have a pet. But for those who do not have a pet, being alone can be rather nice.

There are plenty of activities that are better when done solo: going to the movies, enjoying drinks and appetizers at happy hour, shopping and traveling. Working alone also has its benefits. People tend to be more creative when they can think and brainstorm alone, and then join a group to share ideas. Forbes Living also recognizes that being alone can really help clear the mind. It is easier to think and wipe negative thoughts from consciousness when no one else is near to interrupt.

People who are married or in a relationship can also benefit from me time. It is essential to have some quality time alone in order to maintain a healthy relationship.  We all need some space and the quiet it brings to regroup. Take some alone time for yourself today.

Forbes Living TV Shares Tips for Affordable Weddings

Plan the wedding on the beach

It is wedding season. Anyone who has had a hand in planning a wedding can attest to how expensive it can be. Fortunately, Forbes Living TV has some tips for planning an affordable wedding.

Wedding invitations can cost a small fortune if the bride goes the traditional route. The average price of ordering invitations is $439. Most women will opt for digital invitations, or maybe a combination of paper and digital invites.  Paper invitations are nice and are great keepsakes. So maybe order those for the older guests and go online for the others to save some cash.

The wedding dress is a major expense and one that many women are finding hard to choose. The wedding dress or gown is worn for one day and then put in storage. Instead of spending a couple hundred or thousand bucks on this, look into renting one. Other choices are to borrow one from a friend or relative or buy one at a consignment shop.

The wedding reception is the most expensive part of getting married. Find creative ways to make it is less pricey such as having a cocktail and appetizer party instead of a sit down or buffet meal. Buy your own china for the reception, but be sure to wash it at home in the dishwasher before taking to the reception hall. Use good quality silk flowers instead of fresh ones on tables and ask décor. Another option is to host the wedding on the beach or in a city or state park.

The Forbes Living TV show suggests talking to both sets of parents to determine what priorities are most important. Then, a reasonable budget can be set for the day when lives are joined in love and matrimony.

Forbes Living Ponders the Differences between Night Owls and Early Birds

Some people naturally get up with the roosters and hit their performance peak by mid-morning. Others prefer to stay up late and get up later in the morning, hitting their peak later at night. Forbes Living explores the differences between the night owls and early birds.

For the record, this article is being written in the morning, which makes its writer an early bird. Up before the sun, powered by some good coffee, peak performance is reached by 11 AM.  Some might call morning people “coffee achievers”.  With the day starting afresh, there is much to accomplish before noon. The night owls are still cozy in bed as the early birds start checking off completed tasks for the day. Come mid-day, early risers can take a break, catch a cat nap and then get busy with leftover chores.

Night owls are people who like to hit the sack later, around 11 PM or after. They sleep well into the daylight hours of the morning. They reach peak performance in the late evening, around 8 PM. The stillness of the night as others sleep allows them to accomplish nearly every item on their to-do list. No distractions when the world is sound asleep and dreaming. Night people relish to overnight or graveyard shift.

The early morning risers love the bright of day to awaken their senses, minds and bodies. A regular routine is usually a given for day people. Structure is good and keeps them on track. Night people enjoy the freedom of getting work done without real restrictions. The differences between early birds and night owls can be a difference as night and day, or as common as day and night. Forbes Living wants to know: are you an early bird or a night owl?

Forbes Living and Why We Need Pets in Our Lives

Stress Buster

Pets bring more to our lives than just happiness. They bring peace of mind, security and improve our health. Forbes Living shares why we need pets in our lives.

A warm, purring cat on your lap can lower stress and blood pressure. The companionship of a dog can ease loneliness. Watching a fish swim relaxes the mind. Those are just the three most popular pets in the country.  Imagine what an iguana can do.  Researchers now have proof that our pets affect our health. In fact, the experts found that pets profoundly change the biochemistry of our brain.

Researchers in South Africa found that when people stroked and spoke to their dogs, it doubled the level of oxytocin in the blood. Oxytocin increases maternal instincts. The activity with pets also raised levels of beta endorphins, the natural painkillers runners crave, and dopamine – known as the “reward” hormone.  To add more credence that pets are great for everyone’s health – serotonin levels raise to healthy levels when pets are around and we interact with them.

It is easy for us to understand why pet therapy dogs and pet assisting dogs, as well as other pets, can be a panacea for those who manage chronic health and mental conditions daily.  Forbes Living suggests adopting a pet from an animal shelter. The rewards for the animal and the owner double and it’s good for everyone.

Forbes Living on How to Make Holiday Travel a Breeze

There is no doubt about it: holiday travel can be stressful. Travelers who are flying or driving will more than likely find long security check-in lines, possible flights delays and crammed full flights. Drivers should expect heavy traffic on the nation’s roads. Forbes Living offers suggestions for making holiday travel a breeze.

Plan ahead.

If flying, be sure you have everything you need to breeze through the security lines handy. This includes boarding passes, drivers licenses, shoes and jackets off, all loose items in pockets stored in a baggie in an under the seat bag, cosmetics in easy to reach baggies, and tablet and laptops ready to put in the bins.

Keep other airlines schedules handy for your destination in case there is a long delay or cancellation. Keep your patience in check and your kindness up front. These will net you a better chance of getting onto another flight than an entitled attitude.

When boarding, take your time. Store your carry-on carefully with the wheels in back. Take your seat and store the under the seat bag securely under the seat.

If driving, gas the vehicle up the night before leaving. Then pack all items.
Prepare some snacks the night before and grab them with bottles of water to take on the road.
Be sure all doors and windows are locked and the thermostat is set on 78 or higher to save energy.
Slow down on the road. Let the hurried drivers pass.
Take turns doing the driving if the trip is long.

Enjoy each other’s company.

Forbes Living TV wishes everyone traveling through the holidays a safe and peaceful journey.

Forbes Living and the Best Amenities in the Airport

Yoga studio at DFW airport

Forget the corner newsstand which sells magazines and newspapers from around the world. Forget the restaurant that sells gourmet healthy meals. Forbes Living learns some big city American airports offer relaxation, farm fresh fruit and veggies and grow their own food not far from the gate you’re about to depart.

Major city airports in the U.S. are upping their game when it comes to what they offer in terminals and near departure gates.  From yoga studios and spaces to organic food, airports may very well once again be taking us back to the day when flying was fun and something to look forward to. Some airports are bringing in local breweries, farmers markets, and green, peaceful places to de-stress in-between flights. Forbes Living knows that travelers remember the airport by what there is to eat and buy. The more eclectic the offerings, the more people will spend some of their money in that airport which contributes to the city. It is a win-win for everyone. Passengers get restful places and cool places to spend some money, and the airport and city boost their revenue. Hopefully, this will translate to more visitors to the city. The city of Pittsburgh was one of the first in the nation to try a different way to get passengers to spend money. Their street pricing and upper-end stores appealed to almost very kind of traveler. The formula worked then and it works now.

Forbes Living TV Shares Scary Food Traditions

This couple will not have any bad luck at all.

Do not sniff basil leaves or a scorpion will appear in your brain. These and other scary food traditions are explained by Forbes Living TV.

Who knew that something as simple and fulfilling as bread could have so many superstitions tied to it? Check these out: if you don’t cut a cross in the top of the loaf of bread, the devil will sit on it. Only cut one end of the loaf or the devil will get out and fly around your house. Holes in a loaf of bread symbolize a coffin and indicate someone will die soon. Keep the loaf upright because if kept upside down it means bad luck is coming your way. All said, another name for the devil is empty carbs?

Crush the shells of cracked eggs or else a witch will use the piece to build a boat and cast a spell for terrible seas. Push a spoon into the bottom of an egg after boiling it to rid the shell of the devil, who likes the sulfurous smell of yolk because it reminds him of home. These are not bad thoughts, after all. Better safe than sorry.

This one might explain why there are single girls: each family member should take a turn stirring the Christmas cake mixture – especially unmarried girls, who will remain alone for another year. Bad luck will befall the other family members.

Forbes Living TV has also heard that throwing rice at a just married couple keeps evil spirits at bay so they wouldn’t bother the happy couple in their marriage. We wonder what it means when the inside of the getaway car is also sprinkled in rice.

Forbes Living TV with Family Travel Reminders

Reserve house and pet sitters early for the holidays

Many families will travel out of town for the holidays. Some will take the roads and some will go by air. No matter which way you and your family travel, Forbes Living TV shares some reminders to keep handy.

Who will take care of the house, mail and family pets while you are away? Now is the time to reserve the best caretakers for these valuable assets. Be sure to add some buffer time to the schedule to allow for delayed flights or heavy traffic congestion. Add an extra day to the schedule, if needed. Make a list of what needs to be done daily.

Families who are taking flights out of town should consider downloading movies on tablets or digital devices a week or more before the flight departs. Sometimes the download is slow even on a fast connection.  The same applies for adding apps and especially those related for travel.

If special meals, such as a gluten-free one, are needed for family members, place that request when reserving the flight and seats. If the reservation is already made, call the airline and add the request well in advance of the flight.

Forbes Living TV also suggests checking the baggage restrictions for all connecting flights. Your checked suitcase may be too big and heavy for the regional airline connection to the destination point. Know before you go.

With a little advance planning, a family holiday trip can go smoothly. Why leave some things to chance?

Forbes Living with Side Road Trip Weirdness

(Carhenge -- Nebraska)

We know school started and the big family vacations have more or less slowed to a halt. But, the holidays are around the corner and so are road trips to visit the relatives. Forbes Living encourages readers to take a little side trip to these crazy, quirky roadside attractions.

The Rain Barrel, Artisan Museum, Islamorada, FL – Located at Mile Marker 86.7 in the Florida Keys is easily seen by the giant lobster in the front. The site has great gift shops, a vegetarian restaurant and is generally a good place to stop and stretch before heading further south in US 1 or before getting on the 18 mile stretch if heading north.

Carhenge, Allliance, Nebraska – This is the Stonehenge version but with cars. Thirty-eight vintage (read old) cars were used to make it.

Red Wood Forest, Klamath, CA – The giant Tree of Mystery are pretty cool when one thinks about how they grew that way.

Lucy the Elephant, Margate, New Jersey – The six story elephant is pretty cool to walk through if heading to the any of the Jersey shores for a family reunion.

The Forbes Living TV show wants to know if readers know of any other weird road stops across the country. America is a very large country and we are sure there are other places people know about which are just plain fun, quirky, or odd. Please feel free to share with others.

Forbes Living Checks Out Apps to Zap Cyber-Bullies

(image: stopcyberbullying.org)

School is back in session around the country and with it comes the cyber-bullies who think they can hide behind social media accounts and unaware adults. So what can kids who are being bullied and their parents do? Forbes Living shares information on the latest technology and apps which has the power to stop cyber-bullies.

The pain of a child who is being harassed, threatened and bullied online by classmates or other kids now has the opportunity and power to put and end to it. New technology is available and is a good deterrent against online bullying.

But first, nearly 15 percent of students in the 9th to 12th grades have experienced cyber bullying, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. These kids are twice as likely to commit suicide too.

A smart phone app just released called STOPIt gives children the option to take a screenshot of a harassing post, picture or text, and send it anonymously to a trusted adult. This is a very popular feature among teens who want to help but fear retaliation.

We Heart It is a site which allows users to post photos but allows no comments. It is also very popular with teens because of the no commenting feature. For parents who want to know when a cyber-bully posts something negative about their child, there is Metlife’s Defender identity protection program, which offers a service that monitors a child’s online accounts for abusive content and sends alerts to their parents. Forbes Living TV believes this is a good solution for parents who are a little behind on all the social platforms around.

Children and parents should also know what to do if a cyber-bully is present in their lives:
  • Take a screenshot of the image, text message or social post. Be sure to get the user’s name and date the threat is posted or sent.
  • Block the bully’s phone number, unfriend them on Facebook, block them on Twitter and Instagram.
  • Report bullies, including those under age 18, to the website, their parents and the school.
  • Kids should feel comfortable to tell an adult. Any adult they know whom they think will help: a parent, an aunt or uncle, a teacher, school counselor, religious leader like a pastor or rabbi, coach, or after-school mentor to name quite a few.
It takes courage to report someone who is cyber-bullying. When parents and kids do it together, it is less scary.

Forbes Living Reveals How the Moon Affects Us

La Luna as the Moon is often referred to can bring people together, make people go a little crazy and induce birth. Forbes Living offers a few more ways a Super Moon can affect us.

A study from Japan tracked 1,000 births in women who had not been induced. They found more babies were born the closer the Super Moon was to Earth, when the gravitational pull was the greatest. A full moon had no effect.

A Super Moon can mess up a good night’s sleep. A study tracked the sleep patterns of participants in a sleep lap where they had no access to clocks or see outside light. They woke and slept on a normal basis. The data collected found that in the four days before and after a full moon, it took the test subjects longer to fall asleep, they slept less and didn’t fall into a deep sleep. They also had less melatonin, which helps us fall asleep.

ForbesLiving learns that a full moon can affect surgeries too. Patients who had heart surgeries spent less time in the hospital when their surgery occurred when there was full moon. They were also less likely to pass on from the surgery.

A full moon and a Super Moon are beautiful, natural events in the sky. Take time to go outside and appreciate the magnificence of one. Take your love with you. But remember that the word lunatic is derived from the latin word luna.
