Pets bring more to our lives than just happiness. They bring
peace of mind, security and improve our health. Forbes Living shares why we
need pets in our lives.
A warm, purring cat on your lap can lower stress and blood pressure.
The companionship of a dog can ease loneliness. Watching a fish swim relaxes
the mind. Those are just the three most popular pets in the country. Imagine what an iguana can do. Researchers now have proof that our pets
affect our health. In fact, the experts found that pets profoundly change the biochemistry of our brain.
Researchers in South Africa
found that when people stroked and spoke to their dogs, it doubled the level of
oxytocin in the blood. Oxytocin increases maternal instincts. The activity with
pets also raised levels of beta endorphins, the natural painkillers runners
crave, and dopamine – known as the “reward” hormone. To add more credence that pets are great for
everyone’s health – serotonin levels raise to healthy levels when pets are
around and we interact with them.
It is easy for us
to understand why pet therapy dogs and pet assisting dogs, as well as other
pets, can be a panacea for those who manage chronic health and mental
conditions daily. Forbes Living suggests
adopting a pet from an animal shelter. The rewards for the animal and the owner
double and it’s good for everyone.
